Learn More About Your Mercedes-Benz Transmission Service And Clutch Replacement

Do you enjoy the ease that comes with an automatic transmission? Or do you prefer the feel of shifting from gear to gear in a manual transmission? Whatever the case may be, you'll want to make sure that your transmission is well taken care of and is ready to drive you throughout Cinco Ranch, Houston, and beyond for many years to come.

What Is A Transmission?

A transmission is a part that adjusts the gear ratio between the drive wheels and engine as you slow down or speed up. If you have an automatic transmission, the gears are adjusted for you. If you have a manual transmission, you have to adjust them yourself using the clutch.

Four Common Transmission Services

1) Automatic Transmission Fluid Exchange

Every transmission includes transmission fluid that lubricates the gears and moving parts within. This viscous fluid will break down as you drive because of the heat and friction that it endures. Most automatic transmissions are recommended to have their transmission fluid flushed every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. If left unchanged, the fluid will eventually break down to the point where it will damage the transmission.

The automatic transmission fluid exchange process starts with removing the drain plug and completely draining the old fluid. Once empty, new fluid is added, and the plug is inspected and reinserted.

2) Automatic Transmission Filter And Fluid Replacement

The filter inside of the automatic transmission will also become dirty over time and may need to be replaced as well. The filter works to remove any debris or dirt that gets into your transmission fluid and will stop filtering out this debris if dirty, which will cause larger issues.

The automatic transmission filter and fluid replacement process starts with removing the transmission pan and replacing the dirty filter with a brand-new one. The gasket material is then removed and replaced, and the transmission pan is reinstalled. Then a transmission fluid exchange is performed.

3) Manual Transmission Service

A manual transmission includes transmission fluid as well, but also comes with an additional part: the clutch. Because of this added part, manual transmissions are recommended to be serviced every 30,000 to 60,000 miles.

The manual transmission service process starts with draining and evacuating the transmission fluid from the entire system, including the clutch. New transmission fluid is put back in, and the transmission plug is replaced. Then the clutch is inspected and replaced or repaired as needed.

4) Complete Transmission Service

A complete transmission service can be performed on either an automatic or manual transmission. It covers every detail of the transmission, which includes:

  • Transmission fluid replacement
  • Transmission filter replacement
  • Transmission sump and pan inspection
  • Transmission pan cleaning and material replacement (if needed)
  • Clutch inspection (if applicable)
  • Inspection for friction damage or metal particles

When Does My Clutch Need To Be Replaced?

The clutch in your vehicle is a finicky part used as often as the gas pedal or brake. Over time it will become damaged with wear and will need to be replaced. Some warning signs that may show include a spongy or sticky clutch, harder acceleration, odd noises whenever your shift, and more. The clutch replacement doesn't take too long and is a simple procedure, but one that has many different steps involved.
